Designed by Ericka Howill and meticulously handcrafted by Kansas City artisan Peter Kohl, this custom white oak fireplace mantle restores the architectural integrity of a 1918 Craftsman home. Inspired by the silhouette of the original mantle—removed long ago—this piece seamlessly integrates with the home’s historic character. The project required the careful removal of wall-to-wall built-in shelving, plaster, and sheet tile, revealing the original brick fireplace beneath.

Sanded to expose its natural patina, the original brickwork remains untouched, with its distinctive patterns accentuating both the fireplace opening and the artwork above the mantle. The warm, timeworn hues of the brick contrast beautifully with the hand-carved white oak, which features subtle detailing that honors the home's era. Thoughtfully designed and expertly crafted, this mantle is both a restoration and a revival—a piece that feels as if it has always belonged.
